Ailing President finally returns from Europe
Mr. José Eduardo dos Santos, The President of Angola arrived
in Lunanda late Wednesday after spending 17 days in Spain for medical
treatment. He was accompanied by his wife, the First Lady, Ana Paula dos Santos.
They were received at the Luanda military air base by
Vice-President Manuel Domingos Vicente and other top officials of his
government.
The president has visited Spain severally since 2013 with
his last visit being touted as a private visit by presidential media aide.
In a previous visit in may which lasted a total of 28 days, it
was rumoured that he has passed on due to the fact that no official explanation
for his prolonged absence in the country.
President dos Santos has been in power since in 1979 and the
country will go to the polls in August which may eventually see the president
going into retirment.
It is likely the Defence minister João Lourenço may replace
him as he has been nominated as the flag-bearer of the ruling party for the
August 23rd election.
African leaders are fond of traveling abroad to seek better
medical attention abandoning the state of their health instituions in their
home country as can be seen in the case of former president of Nigeria and the
present president, President Muhammadu Buhari who has been away from country
for medical resaons for over two months leaving the most populous black nation
in the hands of the vice president, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo.
